{"id":480,"date":"2011-08-24T17:01:43","date_gmt":"2011-08-25T00:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/?p=480"},"modified":"2011-08-24T17:01:43","modified_gmt":"2011-08-25T00:01:43","slug":"heres-a-great-data-source-for-food-and-nutrition-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/heres-a-great-data-source-for-food-and-nutrition-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s a great data source for food and nutrition facts."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I stumbled across this earlier this food nutrient data set earlier this week: <a href=\"http:\/\/ashleyw.co.uk\/project\/food-nutrient-database\">http:\/\/ashleyw.co.uk\/project\/food-nutrient-database<\/a>.\u00a0 What the author, Ashley, did was take food nutrient data from the US Department of Agriculture and make some sense of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"foods\" src=\"http:\/\/www.csc-ut.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Food-Facts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s available as a free download on his site.\u00a0 The data set comes as a single JSON file, so may be a bit hard to parse.<\/p>\n<p>In this data set, there are&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6,636 unique foods<\/li>\n<li>375,176 nutrient figures<\/li>\n<li>94 unique nutrients across all foods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What you can do with this data is create a food nutrients site of 6-7 thousand pages (easily).\u00a0 It would act as a great, value-added companion to a health site (e.g. food blog, fitness blog, recipes site).\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This kind of data is great for a number of reasons&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It caters very well to long tail searches (e.g. &#8220;Vitamin E content in Red Bull&#8221; or something random like that).<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s providing quality, useful information to visitors.<\/li>\n<li>Lastly, it correlates to high paying ads (since it&#8217;s in the area of food and health).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the next few days, I will be playing around with this data and try to turn it into a site.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>dave<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I stumbled across this earlier this food nutrient data set earlier this week: http:\/\/ashleyw.co.uk\/project\/food-nutrient-database.\u00a0 What the author, Ashley, did was take food nutrient data from the US Department of Agriculture and make some sense of it.
