{"id":139,"date":"2011-04-11T00:15:38","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T07:15:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/?p=139"},"modified":"2011-07-17T16:46:52","modified_gmt":"2011-07-17T23:46:52","slug":"live-case-study-build-300000-page-autoscale-autopilot-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/live-case-study-build-300000-page-autoscale-autopilot-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Live Case Study: The case of 300,000 pages and counting."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is my first live case study.\u00a0 In this case study, I will build and grow an autoscale, autopilot, value-add site from scratch.\u00a0 The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate techniques in real time.\u00a0 With the exception of coding the initial site (these activities are tabulated under day 0), everything is done in real time, including domain registration.<\/p>\n<p>The subject of this case study will be a a niche jobs search site, built off the <a href=\"https:\/\/ads.indeed.com\/jobroll\/\">Indeed API<\/a>.\u00a0 Indeed.com is an established jobs search engine of US-based job opportunities.\u00a0 They have a publishers program with an API that allows our site to pull the job results.\u00a0 For job seekers that click through to Indeed, we will also get paid as a publisher.\u00a0 A nice added bonus, eh?<\/p>\n<p>Our niche job search site will focus on clerical jobs.\u00a0 Within clerical jobs, we have 3 sections: 1 for accounting jobs, 1 for bookkeeping jobs, and 1 for auditing jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, how does the <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/category\/autoscale\/\">autoscale<\/a> work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, upon launch, the site will have 300,000 pages.\u00a0 Note, this does not mean all 300K pages will be indexed by Google.\u00a0 It only means a Googlebot will find 300K unique pages across our site.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how I came up with that estimate.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The US has about 40,000 active zip codes.\u00a0 For each zip code, our site will have 3 unique pages&#8211;1 for accounting jobs in that zip code, 1 for bookkeeping jobs, and 1 for auditing jobs.\u00a0 That&#8217;s 40,000 * 3 = 120,000 pages right there.\u00a0 Within each of those pages, we will list 15 job listings that are provided through Indeed&#8217;s API.\u00a0 (I can list more jobs if I wanted to, but I thought 15 was a good number.)\u00a0 Each of these listings will have a page on our site.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s assume that only 10% of the job listings are unique, which is a conservative estimate.\u00a0 This adds another 120,000 * 15 * 0.10 = 180,000 pages.\u00a0 There we go.\u00a0 In total, we have 120,000 + 180,000 = 300,000 pages!<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s just the starting point.\u00a0 With time, more clerical jobs will be posted on Indeed, which translates into more listing pages on our site.\u00a0 Therefore, the 300,000 will continue to grow&#8211;and at a good pace, since clerical jobs represents the largest occupation in the US!<\/p>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s put down some goals for this site that we can measure against.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve listed some below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create a massive, autoscaling site via an API.<\/strong> This is the subject of my <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/bests-apis-to-autoscale\/\">recent blog article<\/a>.\u00a0 As you can see, the entire site is architected based on this principle.\u00a0 Our site is already 300,000 pages deep, so I consider this goal accomplished.\u00a0 We&#8217;re starting off on a positive note! \ud83d\ude00<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get the site indexed on the day of domain registration. <\/strong> We will do this using the <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/rapid-google-indexer.php\">Rapid Google Indexer<\/a>, which is still free, guys!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get over 1,000 pages indexed by Google within 1 week!<\/strong> I will do this using a SEO strategy that takes into account all <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/understand-the-6-levers-to-seo\/\">6 levers to SEO<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Demonstrate the power of long tail search traffic. <\/strong> No quantification of this goal <em>yet<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><del><strong>More goals to come <\/strong>(possibly)&#8230; You&#8217;re welcome to leave suggestions in the comments.<\/del><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of adding more goals, I&#8217;ve decided to just track the key milestones achieved so far:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Site indexed by Google in 1 day.<\/strong> See Day 2 update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1,000 pages indexed in its first week.<\/strong> See Day 6 update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>21,000+ pages indexed in less than 21 days.<\/strong> See Day 18 update and check out <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/21k-in-21-days.php\">21K in 21 Days<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Site profitable in its first month.<\/strong> See Day 28 update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Site making $100+\/month by month 2.<\/strong> See Days 49-55 update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, how much will all this cost?\u00a0 Hey, I&#8217;m a cheap guy, so the only money I&#8217;m willing to invest right now is the cost of the domain, $7.50.\u00a0 Everything else will not cost me anything extra, because I will be leveraging my existing web hosting account, tools, and other resources, all of which have already been paid for.\u00a0 If you are trying to replicate this experiment, your costs will be the domain name ($7.50 with a GoDaddy coupon) and price of hosting ($2.95\/month for unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth with <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/hIIFbQ\">this promo link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>You may have noticed the initial goals do not focus on monetization.\u00a0 That&#8217;s correct.\u00a0 In the initial phase of this case study, I will only focus on SEO and Google indexing.\u00a0 The second phase will focus on monetization strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, this is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">live case study<\/span>.\u00a0 The beauty of that is there&#8217;s no smoke and mirrors.\u00a0 What you see is real.\u00a0 You can even track the progress yourself, since I will be divulging the domain name once registered.\u00a0 The risk I am taking is that this case study may fail.\u00a0 Techniques that have worked for me in the past, may, for whatever reason (maybe from a Google algorithm tweak?), not work this time around.\u00a0 I will have to react and adapt on the spot.\u00a0 Will I be able to deliver under pressure?\u00a0 We&#8217;ll find out. \ud83d\ude00 Either way, I hope this will be great learning experience for the both of us.<\/p>\n<p>So, sit back, relax, bookmark this page, make yourself a cup of tea, and check back often.\u00a0 I will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">updating this article directly<\/span> with new updates.\u00a0 Any timestamps will be in PST.\u00a0 (I live in sunny Southern California, after all.)<\/p>\n<p>And so it begins&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Day 0 Activities<\/strong><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It took me about 5-6 hours to create the code for this site.\u00a0 That time includes 2 meal breaks.\u00a0 But, keep in mind, I&#8217;ve been doing this kinda stuff, on and off, for over a decade, so I&#8217;ve become very efficient.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the site has 300K pages, it only has 8 files.\u00a0 See the screenshot below to understand the site architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a breakdown of each of the 7 files:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-140\" title=\"casestudy1\" src=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy1.gif 431w, http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy1-300x145.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.htaccess <\/strong>&#8211; This creates the 120K SEO-friendly zip code URLs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>header.php, footer.php<\/strong> &#8211; Just a standard header and footer that I&#8217;m including on all the pages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>index.php<\/strong> &#8211; The homepage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>zip.php <\/strong>&#8211; This is the zip-based search results page.\u00a0 In other words, this file is responsible for 120K pages (40K for accounting, 40K for bookkeeping, 40K for auditing).<\/li>\n<li><strong> listing.php <\/strong>&#8211; This is the individual job listing page.\u00a0 In other words, this file is responsible for 180K (and growing) pages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>browse.php <\/strong>&#8211; This page lists all of the US states and territories.\u00a0 It&#8217;s kinda like a sitemap.\u00a0 This is very important for Googlebot to come across.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This site is based on PHP and MySQL.\u00a0 I have 1 MySQL database, which stores my 40,000 US zip codes.\u00a0 Almost all the content is generated automatically through Indeed&#8217;s Publisher API.\u00a0 The below diagram illustrates how the Indeed data feed and database is being integrated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy_architecture.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-246\" title=\"casestudy_architecture\" src=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy_architecture.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy_architecture.gif 999w, http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy_architecture-300x185.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>4\/11 &#8211; <strong>Unveiled: <a href=\"http:\/\/localclericaljobs.com\">LocalClericalJobs.com<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a screenshot of the purchase, which shows the timestamp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-149\" title=\"godaddy confirmation email\" src=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy2.gif 474w, http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/casestudy2-300x262.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though this case study is not meant to illustrate monetization techniques (I&#8217;ll save that for a future case study!), I decided to slap on a CPA offer.\u00a0 This is an offer about data entry jobs (very relevant to my targeted visitors!) that I found off <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/gK1HVF\">MaxBounty<\/a>.\u00a0 Here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mb01.com\/lnk.asp?o=3002&amp;c=40524&amp;a=58910\">direct link to the offer for your perusal<\/a>.\u00a0 I have close to zero expectations for this CPA, but it will at least pay for the cost of the domain.\u00a0 Also, see how I designed the site so that it could be monetized with ads.\u00a0 The entire right-most column is completely open real estate right now.<\/p>\n<p><em>1:18AM<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I just ran the <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/rapid-google-indexer.php\">Rapid Google Indexer<\/a> for the domain using the keyword &#8220;local clerical jobs.&#8221;\u00a0 I also installed Google Analytics.\u00a0 After some traffic starts to roll in, I will share screenshots from Google Analytics to illustrate long tail SEO.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t be doing any SEO until the site is indexed!\u00a0 This is to illustrate that using the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Google Rapid Indexer alone will get your domain indexed<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, time for bed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4\/12 &#8211; color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>4\/18 &#8211; Day 8 Update<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;ve noticed the number pages indexed by Google is varying between 2,600 and 3,960 pages.\u00a0 Right now, it&#8217;s at 3,960.<\/li>\n<li>I will be converting the job listing pages to SEO-friendly URLs, which should help increase the number of pages indexed.\u00a0 This is an easy change that I will do today.<\/li>\n<li>30 unique visitors, 13 of which came from Google.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>4\/19 &#8211; Day 9 Update<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6,510 pages indexed by Google.\u00a0 Another significant jump today after some dancing yesterday.<\/li>\n<li>All 4 <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/the-seo-matrix-deconstructed\/\">SEO Matrices<\/a> are now complete!<\/li>\n<li>15 unique visitors, 11 of which came from Google.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; also, it&#8217;s marketing efforts are solely for the homepage (since that&#8217;s the only page the site has).\u00a0 He is trying offline techniques to market the site&#8211;e.g. distributing business cards, posting flyers related to finding jobs.\u00a0 With the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/localclericaljobs.com\">LocalClericalJobs<\/a>, we have built a mega site, which has allowed us to monetize through traditional advertising and market via long tail SEO.\u00a0 Long tail SEO is a much more passive way of marketing and on autopilot, whereas going out to reach offline consumers is clearly more proactive and requires constant work for results.<\/li>\n<li>From the thread, I also learned that I can sell job postings via Indeed&#8217;s Publisher program.\u00a0 You set the price you wish to charge for a job posting.\u00a0 Indeed charges a $20 processing\/administration fee, so your profit is anything above $20.\u00a0 I just integrated job postings to LocalClericalJobs and priced it at $149.\u00a0 Therefore, for each job posting made through our site, we&#8217;ll net $129.\u00a0 FYI, Indeed claim the average job listing price is $200 within its network.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see how this works out!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; approach we took for the site.\u00a0 First, we leveraged an <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/bests-apis-to-autoscale\/\">API as a source of autoscaling content<\/a>.\u00a0 Next, pairing that with a <a href=\"http:\/\/themanwhosoldtheweb.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/autoscaling-with-publicly-available-data\/\">US zip code database<\/a>, we created a megasite of 300,000+ pages of unique content.\u00a0 Upon the site&#8217;s launch, we focused our marketing efforts purely on SEO with the sole purpose of getting as many pages indexed by Google as quickly as possible.\u00a0 As more pages were indexed, we started receiving more long tail search traffic, driving up both Indeed and Adsense earnings.\u00a0 At a certain point, we began to monetize more aggressively by going after direct ad sales.\u00a0 Our value proposition to the advertisers was selling them 50,000+ <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">indexed<\/span> and contextual backlinks.\u00a0 Indexed and
